WASH System Strengthening Initiative (SSI) Project

The WASH System Strengthening Initiative is a project aimed at improving the governance and functionality of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in Dedza District, Malawi. This project is implemented in partnership with Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and the Water and Environmental Sanitation Network (WESNET), with BASEDA as a key player responsible for professionalizing water pump repairs and maintenance.

The project’s Phase 1 ran from August 2019 to December 2022, focusing on building the capacity of area mechanics and spare parts retailers. It was funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Krombacher International. The aim was to enhance the sustainability of water services by equipping local communities with the skills and resources needed for effective operation and maintenance of WASH infrastructure.

Phase 2, which runs from January 2023 to December 2025, shifts focus toward the professionalization of repair services. BASEDA has played a pivotal role in the registration of the Dedza Water Point Area Mechanics Association (DWAMA), a professional body responsible for ensuring the proper maintenance of water systems in the district. This initiative aims to ensure that local mechanics are not only well-trained but also recognized and organized into a formal network, increasing the accountability and effectiveness of WASH service delivery.

Key components of the project include:
– Capacity building for area mechanics to handle repairs and maintenance of Afridev water pumps.
– Establishing a sustainable supply chain for spare parts through partnerships with local retailers.
– Strengthening WASH governance by engaging local authorities and service providers.
– Promoting hygiene education and community-led initiatives to ensure the sustainability of water systems.

The success of this project lies in its emphasis on long-term sustainability through the professionalization of local services and its collaborative approach involving multiple stakeholders.

Key Achievements:
– Trained a network of area mechanics and spare parts retailers across Dedza District.
– Established the Dedza Water Point Area Mechanics Association (DWAMA) to formalize and professionalize repair services.
– Ensured the continued functionality of water points by improving maintenance systems.
– Strengthened WASH governance in partnership with local authorities and service providers.

This initiative reflects BASEDA’s commitment to enhancing WASH services by building local capacity and ensuring sustainable access to clean water through community-driven solutions.
