Madzi Mjigo Project

The Madzi Mjigo Project was an Operation, Repair, and Maintenance initiative implemented by BASEDA in the Central Region of Malawi, specifically targeting the districts of Lilongwe, Dedza, and Ntcheu. This project ran from 2006 to 2020 and was funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), with InterAide as the consortium lead and BASEDA as a sub-grantee.

The primary objective of the Madzi Mjigo Project was to develop a sustainable system for the maintenance and repair of water pumps. The project focused on training local mechanics and building a network of spare parts retailers to ensure reliable access to clean water for the communities served.

Key Components of the Project:

1. Mechanic Training and Capacity Building:
BASEDA trained local mechanics in the operation, repair, and maintenance of water pumps, particularly Afridev pumps. This training ensured that mechanics were equipped with the necessary skills to provide timely repairs and maintenance, enhancing the functionality of water supply systems.

2. Network of Spare Parts Retailers
The project established a network of local retailers to supply spare parts for water pumps. This initiative ensured that communities had easy access to the necessary parts for maintenance, promoting sustainability and reducing downtime of water systems.

3. Community Engagement:
BASEDA engaged local communities in the project to promote ownership and accountability for water resources. Community members were involved in decision-making processes regarding the management of their water points, fostering a sense of responsibility.

4. Geographic Focus:
The Madzi Mjigo Project focused on three key districts in the Central Region: Lilongwe, Dedza, and Ntcheu. By concentrating efforts in these areas, the project aimed to maximize its impact on water accessibility.

Key Achievements:
– Trained a network of local mechanics capable of maintaining and repairing water pumps in the target districts.
– Established partnerships with local spare parts retailers to ensure a sustainable supply chain for maintenance needs.
– Improved water access for thousands of households by ensuring the functionality of water systems.
– Empowered communities to take charge of their water resources, promoting local ownership and accountability.

The Madzi Mjigo Project reflects BASEDA’s commitment to providing sustainable solutions for water supply challenges in Malawi. By building local capacity and ensuring communities have the resources they need to maintain their water systems, the project has made significant strides in improving access to clean water for vulnerable populations.
