The Tikonze Mjigo Maintenance Systems (TIMMS) Project is an operation, repair, and maintenance initiative aimed at ensuring the sustainability of water supply systems in rural communities. Implemented by BASEDA from 2006 to 2021, the project targeted seven districts in the Southern and Eastern regions of Malawi: Mulanje, Thyolo, Chiradzulu, Phalombe, Zomba, Machinga, and Balaka. The project was funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) with InterAide as the consortium lead and BASEDA as a sub-grantee.
The TIMMS project focused on developing a sustainable system for water pumps’ maintenance by establishing and training a wide network of local mechanics and spare parts retailers. These mechanics were equipped with the necessary skills to maintain and repair Afridev water pumps, which are widely used in Malawi. This approach ensured that communities could manage and sustain their own water supply systems without depending on external technical support.
Key Components of the TIMMS Project:
1. Mechanic Training and Capacity Building:
– Local mechanics were selected and trained in the operation, repair, and maintenance of water pumps.
– Regular follow-up and support were provided to these mechanics to ensure their continued effectiveness in maintaining water systems.
2. Spare Parts Supply Chain Development:
– A network of spare parts retailers was established to ensure a reliable supply of pump parts.
– Retailers were trained in stock management and the pricing of essential spare parts, making them accessible to the communities.
3. Community Empowerment:
– The project worked closely with local water point committees, providing them with the knowledge and tools to manage their water infrastructure.
– Communities were engaged in fundraising and financial management to ensure resources were available for ongoing maintenance and repairs.
4. Geographic Focus:
– The TIMMS project operated in seven key districts across Southern and Eastern Malawi: Mulanje, Thyolo, Chiradzulu, Phalombe, Zomba, Machinga, and Balaka.
Key Achievements:
– Established a network of local mechanics capable of maintaining over 100 water points in seven districts.
– Trained mechanics and spare parts retailers, ensuring the long-term sustainability of water pumps.
– Improved water access for thousands of households across rural Malawi by ensuring the functionality of water supply systems.
– Built the capacity of communities to manage and sustain their water infrastructure.
