The HIV Prevention and Care Project focused on raising awareness and promoting healthy behaviors, especially among young people. Running from 2004 to 2006 and funded by the European Union (EU), this project targeted Lilongwe District with the goal of increasing HIV/AIDS awareness, encouraging healthier lifestyle choices, and improving health-seeking behavior.
What we did:
– Community Education: We conducted widespread community outreach to educate people about HIV/AIDS, its transmission, and prevention methods. Our goal was to ensure everyone had accurate information to protect themselves and their families.
– Mobile Testing Clinics: We brought mobile HIV Testing and Counseling (HTC) services directly to communities. These clinics provided free, confidential HIV testing, allowing people, particularly youth, to get tested without having to travel far. Counseling services were also available to provide support throughout the process.
– Free Condom Distribution: In addition to education, we distributed free condoms to promote safe practices and help prevent the spread of HIV.
– Referral Services: For individuals who tested positive, we provided referrals to nearby health facilities where they could access additional care and support.
Key Achievements:
– Increased HIV/AIDS awareness, particularly among youth in Lilongwe District.
– Reached thousands of individuals through free mobile testing services.
– Distributed thousands of condoms to promote safe behaviors and reduce HIV transmission.
– Provided essential referral services for individuals in need of further medical support.
This project was instrumental in empowering communities with the knowledge and resources to combat HIV/AIDS. It not only promoted prevention but also offered crucial support to those affected, fostering healthier and more informed communities across the district.
